When Fifth Floor Chambers was established by lawyers transitioning from a larger practice, their new workplace needed to create a strong first impression, provide a calm and professional environment for high-pressure work, and reflect the confidence of a new practice with a clear identity of its own.
Located on George Street in Brisbane, the project involved a full demolition and fit out, transforming the tenancy into a refined legal workplace with a warm, residential quality. The brief called for a space that felt warm, calming, and inviting, while still supporting the privacy, storage, and functional requirements of a busy legal team.
A key driver behind the strategy was equality across the workplace. Rather than creating a hierarchy of offices, Fifth Floor Chambers wanted most offices to feel generous, consistent in size, and equal in offering. Access to natural light was carefully maximised, helping to create a lighter and more open environment for people who often work long and demanding hours.
The arrival experience became one of the defining moments of the project. The reception area was designed to feel high-end, welcoming, and composed, setting the tone for the workplace from the moment clients and visitors arrive. A beautiful natural stone statement piece acts as an anchor within the space, balanced by layered textural finishes, warm timber-look panelling, brass accents, and softened lighting. Together, these elements create a sense of quiet sophistication without feeling overly corporate.
Throughout the workplace, the design balances openness with privacy. Sheer curtains and fluted privacy film allow light to move through the floorplate while providing discretion where needed. This was particularly important for a legal environment, where confidentiality is essential, but the client did not want the workplace to feel closed off or heavy.
Materiality played a significant role in shaping the atmosphere. Tactile cork flooring brings warmth and softness underfoot, while full-height timber-look panelling and doors introduce a strong architectural rhythm. Brass details are used with restraint, adding refinement without overpowering the palette. Accent lighting was carefully selected to create a moody, elevated effect, proving that thoughtful design decisions can deliver a premium outcome.
Behind the finished aesthetic sits a highly considered approach to detail. The joinery was designed and delivered with particular care, using bronze recessed shadow lines, fine trims, and refined junctions to create a sophisticated finish. These details may not be immediately obvious to a visitor, but they are critical to the overall quality of the space. They give the workplace its sense of precision and permanence.
As with many compact commercial interiors, the project required careful coordination between design intent and site realities. One of the key challenges came through the services and mechanical locations, which made it difficult to achieve the original recessed LED cove detail around the reception perimeter. Rather than compromising the effect, Cachet’s design and delivery teams worked closely on-site to adapt the solution. By relocating the feature and adjusting its shape, the team was able to retain the desired mood and visual impact while responding to the constraints of the existing building.
The success of the outcome was driven by close collaboration across every stage of the project, from documentation and procurement through to construction. Cachet’s design and delivery teams maintained a detailed review process throughout, ensuring the design intent was protected as the project moved from concept to completion.
The result is a workplace that feels calm, polished, and deeply considered. While designed for a legal practice, the space avoids the traditional stiffness often associated with professional services environments. Instead, it offers a more residential sense of comfort, helping to reduce stress and create a more supportive setting for both the team and their clients.
For Fifth Floor Chambers, the new office represents an important new chapter. It provides the functionality and privacy required for legal work, while creating an environment that feels warm, confident, and personal. The clients were deeply engaged throughout the process, placing trust in the team and valuing both the design vision and quality of delivery.
This is a small workplace with a strong design presence. Through natural materials, refined detailing, and careful planning, this Brisbane legal office is elevated, calm, and built around the people who use it every day.
